ABSTRACT:
Zinc is an essential trace element whose absorption and utilisation are influenced by its chemical form, dietary interactions and gastrointestinal environment. Liposomal delivery offers a potential formulation strategy for improving the delivery characteristics of zinc through phospholipid-based vesicles. This review examines the development of LipoEdge™ Liposomal Zinc by WBCIL, focusing on critical quality attributes, physicochemical characterisation, gastrointestinal behaviour and bioavailability validation. Key parameters including particle size, polydispersity index, zeta potential, encapsulation efficiency, morphology and stability are discussed alongside the biological mechanisms governing zinc absorption and transport. The review also highlights the distinction between successful liposomal formulation and demonstrated bioavailability enhancement, proposing a translational pathway from formulation optimisation and in vitro evaluation to comparative pharmacokinetic and human studies. This evidence-based approach supports the development of a scientifically characterised and reproducible liposomal zinc platform for pharmaceutical and nutraceutical applications.
