ABSTRACT:
A lipid bilayer membrane encloses an aqueous compartment in a liposome, a biologically inert microscopic vesicle. The most effective and widely used drug delivery system is liposomes. However, liposomes have a poor stability issue that makes storage a challenge. Pro-liposomes were discovered by Payne et al. in 1986 to solve the stability issue. Pro-liposomes are described as dry, free-flowing particles with a dispersed system that, upon coming into contact with water, instantly form a liposomal suspension. Pro-liposome is helped to improve the bioavailability. This paper reviews the method of preparation, merits, evaluation of Pro-liposomes and highlights its potential to be exploited for different routes of administration and also, we discuss the future aspects.
