ABSTRACT:
Cognitive development is a critical factor influencing learning ability, behavior, and overall societal productivity, particularly during early stages of life. The developing brain requires a high supply of energy and essential nutrients such as proteins, fatty acids, and micronutrients to support neuronal growth and function. However, inadequate maternal nutrition and poor awareness of infant feeding practices can lead to malnutrition contributing to neuroinflammation and impaired cognitive outcomes. This study integrates biological and social perspectives by focusing on maternal nutritional awareness and plant-based neuroprotection. Clitoria ternatea, rich in anthocyanins (ternatins), flavonoids, and phenolics, was selected. A hydroethanolic extraction was used to obtain bioactive compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that may reduce oxidative stress and support neuronal health. The findings suggest that the phytochemical profile of Clitoria ternatea may contribute to cognitive support by protecting neural tissues from oxidative damage linked to nutritional deficiencies. In conclusion, integrating maternal nutrition awareness with plant-based strategies offers a meaningful approach to cognitive health. The assay results demonstrated notable antioxidant activity of the extract when compared with standard compounds (diclofenac), supporting its potential as a neuroprotective agent. Although not a direct therapeutic intervention, it may serve as a supportive strategy for promoting brain health.
