ABSTRACT:
Since ancient times, plants have played a significant role in traditional medicine across various cultures. However, further research is essential to better understand their safety, effectiveness, and overall quality. Annona squamosa L. is one such plant that has been widely used in traditional healing practices. Commonly grown in tropical and subtropical regions, A. squamosa has shown promising biological activities in its different parts—including the bark, leaves, and roots—with the leaves being especially noted for their antioxidant, antifungal, and anticancer properties. In India, the young leaves of A. squamosa have traditionally been used to manage diabetes, while in South China, the seeds are believed to help reduce cancer-related effects. The leaves have demonstrated a wide range of pharmacological properties, including antimicrobial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antiulcer, antidiabetic, antidiarrheal, antiplatelet, antioxidant, hepatoprotective, neuroprotective, and cytoprotective effects. Phytochemical analysis reveals that the leaves contain several bioactive compounds such as coumarins, tannins, cardiac glycosides, flavonoids, carbohydrates, and saponins. Nutritional studies also show that the leaves are rich in water, protein, lipids, fiber, ash, and calcium—adding to their medicinal potential.
